Every computer that is connected to the Internet is given a numerical sequence of numbers called an IP address. When a web site is developed and placed on the Internet it has its own IP address so other computers can connect to it. Because these numbers can be cumbersome or difficult to remember they are translated into a name for easier reference, in other words a Domain Name for example

A domain name is always written in lower case with a dot instead of a space.
For a .au extension you will need to be a registered business and supply your ABN or have a registered trade name for your actual domain name.

What is a Domain Name
A domain name is comprised of different sections that are separated by a full stop. Web network – hostname – zone name – country code.
The first is www this represents the World Wide Web network.
The second is the host name.
This is a name chosen by a person or company etc. that the web site is for. The domain name is unique within a given zone name and usually has a name that represents them in some way, or maybe just a catchy name. The host name is written as one word. In Australia the domain name is the same name as your business or a registered trade name. An ABN must be supplied.
Third is the zone name.
The common zone names include com (commercial organization), edu (educational), gov (government), co (company), org (non-profit organizations), and net (networking organization). These are also called Top Level Domain names (TLD). Since 2001 more TLD’s have been introduced.
In Australia the main zone names are:
com.au
